A seven rupee drug for treatment of Thalassaemia


Pakistani doctors found a way to treat Thalassaemia a deadly disease without blood transfusion as well as identifying the gene mutation that causes this disease.


Dr Shamsi and Dr Ansari and others in collaboration with the National Institute of Child Health and the National Institute of Blood Disease and Bone Marrow Transplantation research of 10 years resulted in evolving a cheapest drug and they also identified five out of seventeen genetic disorders that were associated with this disease. The drug founded for the treatment of Thalassemia costs merely R7.
