To give you an idea of how old Angry Birds is, our 2010 review states that it was available on iOS, webOS, and something called Maemo 5 before it even appeared on Android. Not only is it still active more than 13 years later, but Sega is also buying developer Rovio for about $776 million. In addition, Rovio will debut the first eatery with an Angry Birds theme on Friday, July 8. Its name is "iSwii by Angry Birds," and it will be situated in the Food Court of Tangram's new mall in Flushing, Queens, New York, ready to hurl cakes, pastries, and other delights into your mouth.
Rovio, in collaboration with the construction company SCG America, promises "endless culinary treats, bright visuals, the newest Angry Birds Games, and interactive technology." Outside the entryway, it is decorated with "Instagrammable" NYC-themed statue installations, a ceiling mural, a terrazzo counter, and flooring that resembles sprinkled desserts. Along with these things, you'll notice "nest-like wicker and hanging chairs, bird paradise graphic wall coverings, and tropical plants on the shelving units where hatchlings, the baby birds wander around."
The press announcement states "yummy seasonal holiday cakes and pastries," and the accompanying photo primarily features desserts, candy, and other sweets. However, no menu was displayed. It also hosts private events in "nests" or "rooms" where guests can play virtual reality games and enjoy gifts like Angry Birds-themed gift bags that may be customized.
The popularity of a restaurant based on an app that peaked in 2015 with the release of the Angry Birds movie is uncertain. Whatever the case, Sega's acquisition for $3.5 billion demonstrates the IP's continued value, and the app has received over 5 billion downloads to date. In addition, the restaurant has a 2013 ambiance that might make it a significant nostalgia draw.
