New technology of converting waste heat to electricity by a thermoelectric material

Recently, scientists have found out a way to convert waste heat to electricity by some sort of a thermoelectric material which is said to be the best in the world. This material could signify a paradigm shift, as inefficiency of current thermoelectric materials has limited their commercial use. 


This environmentally stable material is expected to convert 15 to 20 % of waste heat to useful electricity. Possible areas where it will be applied include the automobile industry, heavy manufacturing industries and places where heavy combustion engines are operated continuously. The new material, based on the common semiconductor lead telluride, is the most efficient thermoelectric material known.
